Fans are calling on Andoni Iraola to make a tough choice after a Liverpool star had his ‘worst’ game against Newcastle.
Liverpool fans are asking Andoni Iraola to reconsider starting one of his key players after a tough game. The Reds kicked off their Premier League season with a 2-2 draw against Newcastle United in Iraola’s first match in charge.
Early on, Anthony Elanga put Newcastle ahead within five minutes, beating the Liverpool defense with his speed and finishing calmly past Alisson Becker. The game stayed exciting, with both teams creating chances. Liverpool got back on level terms 10 minutes after halftime when Cody Gakpo curled a beautiful shot into the net.
But Newcastle fought back quickly. Substitute Joe Willock scored after a strong run from Yoane Wissa, putting the home side ahead again. Just when it looked like Iraola might lose his first match, new signing Victor Munoz was brought down in the box by Lewis Hall. Dominik Szoboszlai stepped up and confidently scored a last-minute penalty to earn a point.
Despite the equalizer, many fans felt Szoboszlai’s overall performance was below his usual standards. Last season, he was one of Liverpool’s best, scoring 13 goals and showing his ability to play in different positions, including right back. Fans hoped he would improve under Iraola, but watching him play alongside Ryan Gravenberch in midfield left some unhappy.
Comments from fans included: “Szoboszlai had another poor game without set pieces,” and “They both seem to avoid challenges; hopefully, Nyoni starts next week.” Some even called for Szoboszlai to be dropped from the starting lineup, saying it was his worst game for Liverpool since he joined three years ago.
Iraola’s style needs a strong, disciplined midfield, which is something Szoboszlai doesn’t seem to provide yet. This may be why Liverpool looked vulnerable to quick counterattacks. If this continues, Iraola might have to make a tough choice about his key playmaker.
Many agree that Szoboszlai plays much better in a more advanced position rather than deep midfield. Liverpool will likely need to bring in a more defensive-minded midfielder to balance the team—especially after Curtis Jones left for Inter Milan. Fans are hoping for this to happen before the September 1 transfer deadline.
