Alex started his F1 career in 1991, racing for teams like Jordan, Minardi, and Lotus during the early ’90s. He later moved to the CART series in the US, where he found great success, winning the championship two years in a row in 1997 and 1998.

In 2001, Alex faced a life-changing accident at the Lausitzring track in Germany, which led to the loss of both his legs. But he never gave up. Instead, he took up para-cycling and went on to win two gold medals at the 2012 London Paralympics, then repeated this amazing achievement in Rio in 2016.

His family shared the heartbreaking news that Alex passed away suddenly on May 1st. They said he died peacefully, surrounded by those who loved him, and asked for privacy as they mourn.

Besides his Paralympic success, Alex was a 12-time world champion and even won the men’s para-cycling race at the New York Marathon in 2011. Remarkably, he also returned to motorsports after his crash, competing in the World Touring Car Championship and winning four races with BMW between 2005 and 2009.

Following the news of his passing, the FIA, the body that oversees Formula One, expressed their condolences, praising Alex as an incredible athlete and an inspiring symbol of courage and determination.

Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also shared her thoughts, calling Alex “a great champion and an extraordinary man” who turned life’s hard moments into lessons of bravery and strength. She thanked him for giving hope and pride to so many.
