France vs Iraq in serious trouble just hours before the game starts!
France’s second World Cup group match against Iraq might be delayed or paused because of bad weather.
Didier Deschamps’ team started strong in their first Group I game, beating Senegal 3-1. Kylian Mbappé scored twice, making him the country’s top scorer, and Bradley Barcola also scored.
The first game was played at the famous MetLife Stadium, which will host the tournament final. Since their match on June 16, the French team has been getting ready to face Iraq. Iraq began the tournament with a 4-1 loss to Norway.
The France vs. Iraq game is scheduled at Philadelphia Stadium (formerly Gillette Stadium) but could be delayed or stopped because of possible storms in the area. FIFA officials are ready to follow safety rules if bad weather happens.
According to FIFA and local rules from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the game must stop if lightning strikes within eight miles of the stadium, and fans have to leave their seats.
Players have to leave the field and find shelter. They’ll get a short warm-up before the match resumes once it’s safe to return. The game can only restart after there’s been no lightning for 30 minutes.
NOAA says all activities should pause when you see lightning, hear thunder, or the sky looks stormy.
There isn’t a fixed rule for stopping the match completely; FIFA decides case by case, and no set maximum wait time has been given.
Some host cities like Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, Miami, and New Jersey often have storms, as do Mexico City and Monterrey. But storms aren’t very common in Philadelphia.
If the match can’t finish, it will usually continue from the point it stopped on a new date.
Lauren Lambrugo, Chief Operating Officer of Philadelphia Soccer 2026, told NBC10 how they would handle lightning during the game. She said, “They’ll start evacuating the stadium to the main concourse for emergency shelter. Then they have to wait 30 minutes before bringing everyone back to the field.”
When asked about postponing the match, she said, “They will make sure the match is broadcast and played tomorrow.”
