Gary Neville shares his honest thoughts on the Man Utd vs Bournemouth game, pointing out exactly who he thinks is at fault.
Gary Neville couldn’t hide his frustration during the first half of Manchester United’s Premier League game against Bournemouth, with Michael Carrick’s team 2-0 behind.
Neville was commentating for Sky Sports at Old Trafford when goals from Rayan and Marcus Tavernier gave the Cherries a comfortable lead. The mood in Manchester was pretty down—not just because of Storm Boelo—and Neville chose the end of the first half to express how upset he was with what he saw on the field.
“You can hear the boos. The atmosphere could turn quickly in the second half,” Neville said on Sky Sports, before explaining where the problems lie. “The issues aren’t really Michael Carrick’s fault, but he’s the one who will take responsibility. The real problem is with the players and the people in charge of the club’s sports side. It’s tough for Carrick and for the CEO Omar Berrada and Jason Wilcox sitting nearby. Berrada was shaking his head—this feels like a never-ending problem. United’s best hope is to make things chaotic and unpredictable.”
Earlier, Neville pointed out United’s lack of options, noting that center-back Leny Yoro had to play right-back, and Yoro’s mistake led to Bournemouth’s second goal. “Yoro playing full-back is not ideal,” Neville said. “He did well in one game at the back post, but at Old Trafford you need to be confident with the ball and good in one-on-one situations, which he isn’t. Sometimes he looks uncomfortable and slips, especially on a slippery pitch. My worry was Bournemouth would take advantage of that—and they did.
“The funny thing is, Carrick might have to rely on Bruno Fernandes to help rescue the game. That’s not where he wanted to be, especially after dropping Bruno because of his comments following the Como loss.
“This whole situation is a mess. Manchester United have never really played well today—not bad, but nothing good either. It just feels empty.”
When the second half started, Neville added, “Bournemouth are 2-0 up at Old Trafford, and honestly, this might be their easiest game so far. United are just too easy to play against, and Bournemouth know exactly what they’re doing. They’re an experienced, well-run club, and they’ve been fantastic today—they deserve to be winning.”
Neville summed up the mood perfectly when he said, “I just saw Bournemouth warm up with hardly any cheers, and Lisandro Martinez came on with very little applause too. Usually, a player gets a warm welcome, but not today.”
