Gavi decides to join Man Utd after they agree to pay £35m price tag

Barcelona midfielder Gavi has reportedly made up his mind about whether he wants to join Manchester United this summer.

The 22-year-old missed a big part of the 2025/26 season because of a knee injury and had surgery in October. He came back in March and played an important role as Barcelona won the La Liga title. After that, he was chosen for Spain’s World Cup-winning team.

At the World Cup, Gavi only played briefly during the group stage against Austria and didn’t get on the field in the final win over Argentina. Since then, he hasn’t played in Barcelona’s pre-season because of a rest period after the tournament. This has led to talk about whether he might leave the club.

Reports say his stay at Camp Nou isn’t set in stone, and Manchester United was ready to pay about £35 million for him. Michael Carrick’s team wants to strengthen their midfield after Casemiro left on a free transfer and Manuel Ugarte suffered a serious knee injury at the World Cup.

United has already brought in Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans for over £70 million combined, but they’re looking for one more midfielder. Liverpool has also shown interest in signing another midfielder, including Gavi.

However, according to the Daily Mirror, Gavi has made it clear he doesn’t want to move to Manchester United after hearing of their interest.

Barcelona’s coach Hansi Flick is also said to be hesitant about letting Gavi go, especially since he’s still getting back to full fitness after struggling with injuries, including a serious ACL injury in 2023 that took nearly a year to recover from.

Gavi has praised Flick for helping him through his comeback, saying he’s “very grateful” to the coach. In an April 2025 interview, Gavi shared: “It’s been a really tough journey coming back from my injury. I’ve never had anything this serious before. It’s especially hard when you’re young. But all the pain has been worth it. I’ve learned so much about how to stay positive and control my emotions. Some days were harder than others, but achieving my goal of playing football again—that’s what makes me happy and makes it all worthwhile.”
