“It really mattered” – Roy Keane shares what Bruno Fernandes said to him in a phone call after the ‘lie’ comments
Roy Keane recently shared that he had a “lovely and honest” phone call with Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes after a little mix-up between them.
It all started when Fernandes said in an interview that sometimes he chose to pass rather than shoot while going for the Premier League assist record. Keane misunderstood this and thought Fernandes was focused on his individual record instead of the team, which he didn’t agree with. Fernandes then said Keane had got his words wrong.
Fernandes later appeared on a podcast and said he wanted to clear things up with Keane. He even asked former United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for Keane’s number so they could talk directly.
Keane picked up the phone and had a great chat with Fernandes. He told the Stick to Football podcast, “He apologised, I forgave him, no problem. It was a good chat.”
Keane explained that sometimes things said during podcasts or games don’t come across clearly, which can upset people. Fernandes reached out because he wanted to sort things out, and they had a mature, friendly conversation.
Keane also mentioned he prefers to keep some distance from players and their agents, but occasionally it’s important to talk things through—and this was one of those times. He really enjoyed the chat and hopes Fernandes did too. It helped clear the air and left him feeling better.
