Jamie Carragher has got fans chatting with a surprising opinion about Liverpool during his appearance on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football.
Carragher was joined by former Manchester United right-back Gary Neville for the first MNF show of the 2026/27 season, with regular host Dave Jones also there.
It didn’t take long for Carragher to talk about Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Newcastle, where Andoni Iraola’s team earned a late point thanks to Dominik Szoboszlai’s stoppage-time penalty at St James’ Park.
A few Liverpool players have faced criticism since the match, especially summer 2025 signings Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak, who both struggled and came with a combined price tag of over £200 million.
Carragher thinks last season’s big transfer window could “set Liverpool back a year or two.”
He mentioned Neville’s earlier point that players like Isak and Wirtz “got off lightly” last season, as most attention was on then-coach Arne Slot and his style, rather than the new players underperforming.
“Yes, it’s only Iraola’s first game, but we’re talking about 12 months of poor form from all these players, except Hugo Ekitike,” Carragher explained.
Liverpool spent a total of £445 million on signings last summer, including Isak, Wirtz, Ekitike, Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong, Giorgi Mamardashvili, and Giovanni Leoni.
The former Liverpool captain added: “If things don’t change in the next few months under Iraola, this transfer window might go down as the worst in Premier League history, considering the money spent and what was expected.”
“These players were meant to build a dynasty for Liverpool. Let’s remember, Liverpool won the league two years ago. They wanted to do what City has done recently – win two or three leagues in five years.”
Fans took to social media to share their thoughts.
One said: “That window looks worse every time you look at it. £445m with so little to show? They signed two strikers for over £200m who have to compete with each other. And spent £116m on a #10 who is worse than Szoboszlai, who was already there. Truly awful.”
Another wrote: “He’s right. Kerkez and Frimpong look terrible. Wirtz and Isak don’t look like game-changers. Leoni had an ACL injury despite looking good once. Mamardashvili can’t kick the ball properly, and Ekitike, the best of them, suffered the worst injury possible.”
A third fan called Carragher “arguably the best pundit in the world.”

Liverpool will play their next game at home against Nottingham Forest on August 29.
