Lisandro Martinez explains why he spoke harshly to Jason Wilcox after Atletico Madrid’s loss
Lisandro Martinez recently explained why he spoke out about Manchester United’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, after their 2-0 loss to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on October 13. After the disappointing game, Martinez told Prime Video that he expected “more from the top, more from upstairs” during the summer transfer window, even though the club spent around £155 million on new players like Youri Tielemans, Andrey Santos, Carlos Baleba, and Karl Darlow.
When asked if more money should be spent to get better players, he answered, “Yes, 100 per cent.” He also said, “I expect more from our technical director. And as players, we have to do more. It’s important to build a strong team to be ready for nights like this.”
His comments might cause some trouble with the club, possibly leading to a fine or suspension, but Manchester United hasn’t confirmed anything yet.
On the evening of October 14, Martinez took to Instagram to explain why he made those remarks. He said he spoke out “in anger and frustration” because the team didn’t get the result they wanted.
He shared, “Those who know me know I live for football with passion, commitment, and a strong desire to win. It hurts when things don’t go our way, especially playing for a club like Manchester United. My words show how much I want this club to compete for big trophies. That’s how I see football and the responsibility of wearing this shirt.
“When I say I want more, I mean the ambition we all need at this club. We have to keep growing, get stronger, and have everything needed to compete at the highest level. We all have to push ourselves, starting with me.
“I know it’s mainly on us, the players, to deliver, and I take the lead on that. We need to demand more from ourselves and work together to bring Manchester United back to the top.
“I believe in my teammates, the manager, and everyone working hard for this club. The way forward is to keep working together with ambition and commitment.
“My goal since day one has been to win, compete at the highest level, and give everything for this badge.”
Manchester United will play away against Leeds United on October 18.
