Liverpool hit a big setback with just days left in the transfer window.

Liverpool have hit a big setback in their chase for PSG’s Ibrahim Mbaye as time runs out to bring in new players for their new boss, Andoni Iraola.

Since winning the Premier League in 2024-25—their first title in 35 years—Liverpool have struggled. That winning team featured stars like Mohamed Salah, who has now left, along with Trent Alexander-Arnold, Curtis Jones, Ibrahima Konate, and Andrew Robertson.

The title was won under Arne Slot, but after a tough 2025-26 season, despite making the Champions League with one of the lowest points totals ever, he was let go by the club owners, FSG. This opened the door for Iraola, who had a great season with Bournemouth, leading them to their best-ever 6th place finish.

Before his first season as Liverpool manager, the club has brought in exciting players like La Liga youngster Victor Munoz, Ligue 1 defender Jeremy Jacquet, and Barcelona loanee Ronald Araujo. But without a big signing, and after talks with PSG’s Bradley Barcola and Ibrahim Mbaye, Liverpool’s chances of winning trophies next season look slim.

Now, things have taken another turn. Reports say Mbaye is getting frustrated with Liverpool’s slow talks and is ready to speak with other clubs. L’Equipe, shared by Football365, says Mbaye feels the deal has dragged on too long — a feeling Barcola also shares.

With less than ten days left in the transfer window, Liverpool’s attack options look very thin as the new Premier League season starts. The Reds tried to sign Brighton’s Yankuba Minteh, but their two bids, including one around €50 million, were turned down. Cody Gakpo is also linked with a move to Tottenham, which would leave Liverpool’s winger choices among the weakest in the league if they miss out on Mbaye, Barcola, or Minteh.

The main hold-up in the Mbaye deal is money. Liverpool and PSG are about €20 million apart on his value. Talks are moving slowly, but Mbaye’s frustration and openness to other clubs could hurt Liverpool more than the price issue.

Liverpool’s next game is against Newcastle this Sunday at 4:30 PM, and with their squad looking thin, it will be a tough match at St. James’ Park for Iraola’s team.
