Liverpool fans have quickly taken a liking to Andoni Iraola after his first interview, where he shared his thoughts about the World Cup.

Andoni Iraola has already made a great first impression with Liverpool fans by sharing why he’s excited about having experienced players join this summer’s World Cup.

On Thursday night, Liverpool announced Iraola as the new manager, replacing Arne Slot, who left just a year after winning the Premier League.

Liverpool’s statement highlighted Iraola’s successful three years at Bournemouth, where he recently led the team to their first-ever trip to Europe after finishing sixth in the league.

Talking about his goals, Iraola said he’s eager to work with top players who “give you the chance to win titles.” But many fans were especially hopeful about his positive attitude toward young players and those returning from loans.

When asked about Liverpool’s pre-season during the World Cup—which will see several first-team players away in North America—Iraola said it’s a great chance to get to know other players better. “They will be an important part of the American tour. It works really well,” he explained, referring to young and returning players.

Fans loved his fresh approach. One wrote, “A manager who sees the World Cup as an opportunity, not a problem. We’re not used to this.” Another said, “He already understands what’s needed.”

Others compared him to the former manager: “Just compare him to Slot — what a difference, and we’ve only had one interview.” Another added, “I’m so excited to have him at our club.”

One fan was thrilled about the young talents getting their chance: “Leoni, Jacquet, Chambers, Beck, Bajcetic, Nyoni, Elliott, Rio, Danns, Wright—all getting to prove themselves in pre-season is amazing.”

In his first interview as Liverpool manager, Iraola shared why he accepted the job. “I relate to the football style and values here. We’re all committed for this year.” He also mentioned knowing Richard Hughes from before, which helps, but said the main attraction was Liverpool itself.

He’s using the next month to prepare fully and learn more about the club. “I’ve been in the Premier League for three years, so people know Bournemouth’s style. Some things will change with Liverpool, but I don’t want to lose our identity—intensity, aggression, organisation. You have to adapt to the players, but the basics fit well with what Liverpool has been about recently. This club lets me coach top players, and top players help you fight for trophies.”

Iraola admitted he can’t promise everything right away, but he knows what to expect and is ready for the challenge.

He also stressed the importance of starting strong. “When you come to a new club, you need to prove yourself and earn your place. I want to do that quickly so I can celebrate successes with the team and feel fully part of the club.”

“For me, football is about emotions and passion,” he added. “I’m usually calm and rational, but when the game starts and you score, there’s something inside you. That energy is needed as a player, a fan, and a coach. There’s no better place for that than Anfield.”
