Liverpool ‘take the lead’ to sign Premier League star who could change Andoni Iraola’s team

Liverpool are now leading the race to sign Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott and have a big advantage over Chelsea in landing him.

Since joining from Bristol City in 2023, Scott has quickly become one of the Premier League’s brightest midfield talents. He even made his England debut in their 2-0 win against Czechia and starred again in the 7-0 victory over Croatia during the international break.

Scott’s international call-up is a reward for the amazing skill he’s shown at Bournemouth, but even the biggest fans know he’s likely to move on to a major European club soon.

This summer, Bournemouth made it clear Scott wasn’t for sale, turning down several Chelsea offers, including one worth £68 million. But reports say the club may be more open to selling him in January after he declined to sign a new contract.

They reportedly want £100 million for Scott, whose contract runs until June 2028. Liverpool are in a strong position because their manager, Andoni Iraola, helped bring Scott to Bournemouth for £25 million last year and developed him into one of the Premier League’s best midfielders.

Iraola, who recently moved to Liverpool after guiding Bournemouth to European football for the first time, used Scott frequently and knows his value well. It’s still unclear if Liverpool will pay £100 million for a player with 18 months left on his contract, but a bidding war could happen.

Liverpool haven’t added a central midfielder since 2023, when players like Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister came in. They really need to strengthen that area, and Scott could be the perfect fit. He’s great at receiving the ball, passing through defenses, and driving forward strongly.

Scott thrived under Iraola at Bournemouth and has kept showing his talent even as the team has faced challenges under their new manager, Marco Rose. He’s likely open to reuniting with Iraola at Liverpool, especially since he has praised the Spaniard’s trust and coaching before.

“I feel like I have had his trust,” Scott said during the summer. “Defensively, maybe in my first two seasons, I wasn’t ready for the Premier League, and I had to learn from the experienced players. But Iraola trusted me from the start, and I played 34 full games this year, which I’m really proud of. He’s been amazing in helping me improve.”

Scott’s future is definitely one to watch this January, as Liverpool and Chelsea prepare to battle it out to sign the talented midfielder.
