London Mayor Sadiq Khan shares an important update on the Tyson Fury vs Anthony Joshua fight.
The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has shared a new update about the big British heavyweight fight between Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury. Fans have been eager to see these two top British boxers face off, as it would be a huge event in boxing.
Back in December 2022, Tyson Fury suggested having the fight in Cardiff. But, after a contract deadline passed without an agreement, the fight didn’t happen. Fast forward to April, Joshua watched from ringside as Fury won a clear points victory over Arslanbek Makhmudov at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
After the fight, Fury called out Joshua, and Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, confirmed he received a contract soon after. The fight is being arranged by Saudi boxing chief Turki Alalshikh, who wants the fight’s timing to suit fans in the United States—even though both fighters are British.
This Monday, Alalshikh said he plans to talk with London officials about holding the fight at Wembley Stadium. He said, “We want the fight here in England, but the timing needs to work for viewers worldwide, especially in America. If Wembley is available late at night, we want to do it here.”
A spokesperson for Mayor Khan, who has been in office since 2016, said London would be the perfect place for this fight and the Mayor is ready to help make it happen. They shared, “London is known as a sports capital, and the Mayor is working to bring big events here. Wembley has hosted huge boxing matches before with huge crowds, including fights featuring Joshua and Fury.”
The spokesperson added, “Sadiq believes London is the ideal location for Joshua vs Fury and is ready to support efforts to bring this exciting event to the city.”
According to licensing documents from Brent Council seen by Box.live, Wembley’s licence allows for a small number of overnight events. Although Alalshikh said on Tuesday that it wasn’t possible to schedule a late start time in the UK, this information suggests otherwise.
Sources close to the Mayor told BBC Sport that Alalshikh or his team haven’t yet reached out to discuss the fight with London officials.
