Man Utd aims to sign Premier League star after completing Ederson transfer

Manchester United are now focusing on signing a Premier League star after agreeing to a £35 million deal for Brazilian midfielder Ederson. It looks like the Red Devils are about to make their first signing of the summer, with the Serie A player expected to sign a four-year contract at Old Trafford, with an option for a fifth year.

As of Tuesday, June 2, the 26-year-old Brazil international hadn’t had his medical yet, but BBC Sport says the deal should be completed before United’s pre-season training starts in early July. Ederson, who didn’t make Carlo Ancelotti’s final 26-man World Cup squad though he was on the provisional list, is seen as a direct replacement for fellow Brazilian Casemiro, who is leaving when his contract ends in June.

United are also linked with other midfield players like Mateus Fernandes, Alex Scott, and Hayden Hackney. However, Hackney is expected to sign with Everton this summer.

In other news, The Athletic reports that Newcastle’s left-back Lewis Hall is also on United’s radar after a great run with Eddie Howe’s team since moving from Chelsea in 2024. Newcastle don’t want to lose the young England international, especially since selling Anthony Gordon to Barcelona for £69.2 million has eased their need to sell players this summer.

Hall has a contract with Newcastle until 2029 and has played 102 games for the club, scoring three goals—including one amazing long-range goal against United—and providing seven assists. The 21-year-old offers a different style compared to Luke Shaw and is considered one of the most promising young full-backs in the Premier League, thanks to his speed, skill, and crossing. Newcastle value him at £50 million.

United also admire Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali, but his £100 million price tag may be too high. The Athletic says Newcastle plan to follow a ‘one out, one in’ transfer policy this summer, meaning they will sign a replacement if Hall or any other senior player leaves.

Hall has improved a lot under Howe’s coaching, earning four England caps even though he missed out on the final 26-man World Cup squad. Howe often praises Hall’s talent and attitude. About Hall not making the World Cup team, Howe said, “I felt for Lewis and wanted to support him. He’s an outstanding player, very young with a big future ahead. I don’t think missing out will affect him because he’s very strong mentally. It was a big disappointment, but he’ll bounce back.”
