Max Verstappen shared his thoughts after his first time racing in the Nurburgring 24-Hour ended sadly, even though his team was doing really well and aiming to win.
The four-time Formula One world champion started strong, qualifying fourth, which had everyone hopeful for a great debut in this famous race.
Verstappen and his teammates—Lucas Auer, Jules Gounon, and Dani Juncadella—were racing well in the early hours. With just four hours left, they had a comfortable lead.
Everyone on the team drove impressively during the first 20 hours, but Verstappen stood out as he pushed the team into first place.
Unfortunately, just two laps into Juncadella’s turn, things took a turn for the worse. They got a flat tire and a problem with the ABS, so they had to head to the pit stop.
Back in the garage, they found an even bigger issue: a driveshaft fault that meant losing a lot of time and ending their chances of winning.
The car stayed in the garage for four hours while the team worked hard to fix it, and it only came back out for the final lap, which Juncadella finished.
It was a tough and disappointing ending, especially after such a promising race, and Verstappen has now spoken about it.
He said, “It’s very unlucky and frustrating, but these things happen. I still really enjoyed racing with Jules, Luggi, and Dani. Thanks to the team and everyone supporting us.”
Verstappen will return to Formula 1 next weekend, racing for Red Bull at the Canadian Grand Prix. He’s keen to bounce back as he’s currently seventh in the championship, while his team is fourth in the constructor’s standings, still behind McLaren in third.
