Mexico star taken to hospital right after England loss with serious injury
Mexico’s star player Santiago Gimenez was rushed to the hospital right after their thrilling 3-2 World Cup last-16 loss to England because of a bad ankle injury. Gimenez came on late in the game, hoping to help Mexico equalize and take the match to extra time. But in the 98th minute, while chasing the ball, he landed awkwardly on his ankle and went down in pain. He tried to walk off but had to be taken to the hospital as England celebrated their big win at Estadio Azteca.
Because of Gimenez’s injury, Mexico had to finish the game with 10 players—just like England did earlier after Jarell Quansah got a straight red card in the 54th minute when England was leading 2-1. Mexican reporter Ruben Rodriguez said Gimenez has a second-degree ankle sprain and might be out for about eight weeks.
England’s team also had some injury worries in a strange twist. During their post-match celebrations, midfielder Jordan Henderson slipped while climbing over a board and fell hard on his wrist. He’s being checked out now, but coach Thomas Tuchel said the injury looks pretty bad. “Not good, not good,” Tuchel told the BBC. “Jordan hurt his wrist, went to the hospital, and it seems serious. It’s a bad way to end the night.”
Henderson hasn’t played in the World Cup matches so far, though he did get a yellow card during the game against Mexico.
The match itself was full of excitement. Jude Bellingham scored twice early on to give England a strong start. Mexico’s Julian Quinones scored a great goal to level the game just before halftime. After Quansah’s red card, Harry Kane scored a penalty to put England ahead again. Mexico’s Raul Jimenez responded with a penalty of his own after a VAR check.
England had to hold out for the last 32 minutes, plus 11 minutes of extra time, with just 10 players but defended brilliantly to win. Dan Burn from Newcastle came on late for his first World Cup appearance and helped England keep their lead.
“It was an unforgettable night,” Burn said. “The stadium, the moment—it was a crazy game. I’m really proud of the team. We showed we can win in different ways. This game showed our team spirit and brotherhood. Everyone did an excellent job. I think this match will be remembered for a long time.”
Next up for England is the quarter-final against Norway, who beat Brazil 2-1 in New Jersey.
