Nuno Espirito Santo talks about the ‘controversial’ call against Arsenal that stopped West Ham from scoring a goal to tie the game.

Arsenal came away with a 1-0 win against West Ham, bringing them closer to the Premier League title, but the match wasn’t without some drama. The Gunners now sit five points ahead of Manchester City as they chase their first English top-flight trophy in 22 years.

Leandro Trossard scored the only goal in the 83rd minute, but West Ham had a goal disallowed in stoppage time. The referee, Chris Kavanagh, checked the VAR to see if David Raya had been fouled before the goal. After reviewing the footage, the goal was ruled out because of a foul against West Ham.

West Ham’s manager, Nuno Espirito Santo, shared his thoughts on beIN Sports. He called the decision “controversial” and said the rules around fouls during corners have confused players and fans alike. He feels that referees are being inconsistent, making it hard to understand why some calls are made and others aren’t.

This loss leaves West Ham in the relegation zone, just one point behind Tottenham Hotspur with only two games left. Their schedule is tough—they have to play Newcastle United away and then Leeds United at home. Even if the disallowed goal had stood, they still wouldn’t have moved out of the relegation zone because of goal difference, but it would have given them a better chance to stay up.

Nuno’s call for fair and consistent refereeing found support from former Premier League winner Peter Schmeichel, who said on ViaPlay that Arsenal wouldn’t be leading the league if those types of goals were ruled out. He believes Arsenal have been blocking keepers all season long, which has helped them stay on top.

Fans from other clubs quickly pointed out similar incidents where Arsenal benefited from blocking goalkeepers and scored goals that counted. Like Schmeichel, many are asking for clearer and more consistent decisions from referees during Premier League matches.
