Hull City, who just earned their spot in the Premier League, need to sell some players by July 1 to avoid possible penalties, their owner Acun Ilicali has shared.

The Tigers secured promotion after beating Middlesbrough 1-0 in the Championship play-off final at Wembley. Last summer, Hull couldn’t pay transfer fees and had to rely on free transfers and loans. Still, with manager Sergej Jakirovic, they surprised everyone by finishing sixth in the Championship. Their top scorer, Oli McBurnie, a 30-year-old Scot, scored 18 goals and even netted the winning goal in the final.

Before bringing new players in for the Premier League, Hull must first sell some to raise money. Reports say they need around £6 million from player sales to meet Financial Fair Play rules. Even though Hull will earn a lot from playing in the Premier League, FFP looks at a three-year period and doesn’t count future earnings.

While £6 million might not be much for other Premier League clubs, Hull was in League One just a few years ago and couldn’t spend on new players last summer. This means they have a smaller squad compared to other teams.

Owner Ilicali told the Yorkshire Post that the club did “overspend” and needs to sell players by July 1 but is hopeful they can do this without losing their key stars. He said, “We have overspent, and we have to sell some players by July 1. It won’t be very easy or very hard. Now we are a Premier League team, and player values have gone up, which is good. Some players know they may not stay, and we’ll work on solving this. It’s a new challenge, but we will manage it. I’m not worried; we have handled tougher things before.”

For context, other Premier League teams like Everton and Nottingham Forest have been docked points for breaking financial rules, showing how important it is for Hull to stay on track.
