Premier League shares why West Ham goal was ruled out against Arsenal
Arsenal came out on top with a 1-0 win against West Ham in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon, but not without some drama. West Ham thought they had scored a late equalizer, only for it to be ruled out because of a foul on Arsenal’s goalkeeper just before the goal.
The winning goal came late in the game, in the 83rd minute, thanks to Leandro Trossard. Even after that, West Ham pushed hard to get back on level terms. This win put Arsenal closer to winning the Premier League title, extending their lead over Manchester City to five points and keeping them in control of their fate.
However, things could have been very different if West Ham’s goal in stoppage time hadn’t been canceled after a VAR check. Darren England, watching in the VAR room, asked referee Chris Kavanagh to review whether the West Ham player had fouled David Raya, Arsenal’s keeper, while setting up the goal. After watching the replay, the referee decided there was indeed a foul and disallowed the goal.
After the game, the Premier League explained the decision, saying: “After VAR review, the referee overturned the original goal awarded to West Ham United. The referee announced: ‘After review, West Ham number 19 commits a foul on the goalkeeper. Final decision is direct free kick.’”
West Ham will be upset by this call since it leaves them just one point behind Tottenham in the fight to avoid relegation, and they have played one more game. They still have tricky matches coming up against Newcastle and Leeds. On the other hand, Arsenal will feel good about their chances of clinching the title, with easier games ahead against Burnley and Crystal Palace, teams with little left to play for except pride.
