Real Madrid makes big decision about selling Trent Alexander-Arnold after Jose Mourinho passes on him
Real Madrid have reportedly made a choice about Trent Alexander-Arnold’s future after Jose Mourinho decided not to start the right-back in his first two La Liga games since coming back.
Things haven’t gone great for Alexander-Arnold in Madrid so far. The Liverpool star has yet to win any trophies and has even struggled to stay in the starting lineup. Last season, coached by Xabi Alonso and Álvaro Arbeloa, he played just 21 La Liga games and made four assists. Two muscle injuries really disrupted his season, and he was left out of England’s World Cup squad under Thomas Tuchel.
Now that Trent is fit again, Mourinho seems to prefer summer signing Denzel Dumfries at right-back. Dumfries started both wins against Espanyol and Real Sociedad last week. Trent only came on for a short time in the game against Espanyol and didn’t play at all against Real Sociedad, where Kylian Mbappe scored a hat-trick as Real won 4-1.
Because he’s not getting much game time, there are rumors Trent might return to the Premier League. Newcastle United is said to be interested in signing him. European football expert Andy Brassell told talkSPORT that “he’d be brilliant for Newcastle” and encouraged Trent to come back to England after just over a year away.
He said, “Other than a move back to Liverpool, the Premier League is his best option. Newcastle were looking for a right-back before signing Amir Dedic, and although they spent a lot on Dedic, they don’t have endless funds. If Newcastle could get Alexander-Arnold on loan for a year, he’d fit perfectly, especially with the speed they have. Imagine the amazing chances he could create! Maybe Trent isn’t excited by joining a rebuilding team, but financially, the Premier League is the most likely place for him. If it’s not Liverpool, there aren’t many options. He’s a fantastic player who doesn’t always get the credit he deserves and is sometimes seen as a problem instead of a solution.”
But despite all this talk, TEAMtalk says Real Madrid don’t want to sell Trent this summer. Sources say Mourinho believes in him, and he still has a contract until 2031. The report said, “Real Madrid see Alexander-Arnold’s early struggles as part of settling in, not a reason to sell. Trent himself feels at home in Madrid and wants to prove himself wearing the famous white shirt.”
Real Madrid will play their next game at home against Malaga on August 30.
