Red Bull driver and F2 champion ready to compete for a coveted F1 seat
The famous “silly season” of Formula 1 seat changes is about to start with a bang, as an experienced driver and a rising star are set to compete for one of the first open spots on the grid.
Formula 1 is a tough sport with only 22 drivers lucky enough to race each week. If a driver’s results drop, they often lose their seat quickly, and eager new drivers are ready to jump in.
Even though we’re just a third into the season, a big gap has formed in the middle of the pack. Mercedes, Ferrari, McLaren, and Red Bull (especially thanks to Max Verstappen’s magic) remain as the strong top four teams.
As some teams fall behind expectations, all eyes are on the drivers. We might see several seat changes soon as teams adjust to new rules.
Max Verstappen surprised everyone by starting talks with McLaren. Reports also say that Esteban Ocon’s seat at Haas could open up.
Ocon, 29, has raced for many teams over his 11 years in F1, including Manor Racing, Renault, Force India, Racing Point, Mercedes, Alpine, and now Haas. But with just three points this season and falling behind his teammate Oliver Bearman, Haas might think about replacing him.
FOX Sports says Ocon is one of the most likely drivers to lose his seat this year. This talk got louder when Haas tested Leonardo Fornaroli, McLaren’s reserve driver and current Formula 2 champion.
Fornaroli is a young Italian star who made history by winning both the F3 and F2 championships in back-to-back years, joining the ranks of greats like Oscar Piastri and Charles Leclerc. He also beat Red Bull’s Arvid Lindblad in both seasons and now backs up Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri.
Haas boss Ayao Komatsu told The Race, “I don’t know if we need a new driver because we’re focused on our two drivers, but testing Leo was a positive step. He’s a strong driver, trained well by McLaren, so it’s great for us to see him.”
Another option could be Yuki Tsunoda, even though his Honda and Toyota connections complicate things. He’s currently a reserve for Red Bull after a tough season as their second driver. Some reports even suggest he might switch sports and consider IndyCar instead.
If Ocon’s seat opens — whether mid-season or for 2027 — it will kick off the well-known “silly season.” Fans will also watch closely for moves involving drivers like Isack Hadjar (Red Bull), Franco Colapinto (Alpine), and Cadillac stars Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas.
