Steve Clarke faces tough criticism from Scotland fans right after the loss to Brazil

Scotland fans are upset with manager Steve Clarke after his post-match interview following the 3-0 loss to Brazil. Two goals from Real Madrid star Vinicius Junior and one from Manchester United’s Matheus Cunha seriously damaged Scotland’s hopes of reaching the World Cup knockout stages for the first time.

The tough defeat dropped Scotland down the list of the best third-placed teams. Out of 12 such teams, eight move on to the next round. Right now, Scotland is sixth, but with many teams still to play their last group matches, this could change soon.

After the game, the BBC asked Clarke about the result and what it meant for their chances, but the chat didn’t go smoothly. “We made it hard for ourselves. That’s it,” Clarke said. “We gave them the goals, we gave them the game they wanted. Disappointing.” When reminded that Scotland faces a long wait to see if they’ll make it through, Clarke quickly ended the 30-second interview, saying, “I didn’t even think about that. Sorry, I don’t even think of that.”

The short interview quickly spread on social media, and many fans said it was the last straw and that it might be time to let Clarke go after seven years in charge. One fan wrote on X, “You can be upset and not want to do an interview right after the game before talking to players. I get that. But this was terrible.” Another said, “Better managers handle interviews well, win or lose. When will the Scottish media call out Clarke for his strange tactics, poor preparation, and bad attitude toward media duties?” Someone else added, “If you think Steve Clarke should stay, think again! Qualifying for tournaments is great, but showing up, getting embarrassed, and not even trying is not okay! Another four years of this is nonsense.”

In a later interview, Clarke was more honest, saying, “I think we’re going home.” Although Clarke has led Scotland to three major tournaments, the team’s record isn’t great — just one win in nine games, five points, and four goals.

Despite the fan backlash after the 3-0 loss, Scotland still has a chance, though it’s slim, to reach the round of 32. They must finish better than four of the other nine groups, with three groups already decided. For example, South Korea sits third in Group A but beats Scotland due to a better goal difference, and Bosnia leads Scotland in Group B thanks to their four points.

To qualify, Scotland needs at least four favorable results from the remaining games.
