Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson recently shared why he chose to wear a skirt for his very first Met Gala appearance. The WWE star walked the red carpet in New York City with his wife, Lauren Hashian, at the famous event known for its bold and creative fashion.

At 54, The Rock caught everyone’s attention with his outfit, fitting this year’s theme, “Fashion is Art.” He wore a pleated skirt over matching pants, a white silk shirt, a tuxedo jacket, black brogue shoes, and black glasses. His entire look was custom-made by Thom Browne and definitely stood out.

He explained that in his Polynesian culture, wearing skirts, called lavalavas, is normal for men and seen as a symbol of masculinity. He said, “The most masculine men wear lavalavas and skirts.” So, the choice felt natural to him.

The Rock also mentioned that his outfit, which took over 2,000 hours to create, was meant to highlight the contrast between “the mortal body and the immortal body.” His stylist, Ilaria Urbinati, told GQ that including the skirt was a way to challenge ideas about what men with bigger builds can wear. She added that many larger men want to enjoy fashion but feel left out, so The Rock’s look helps change that.

One more eye-catching detail was his sparkling Jacob & Co watch, valued at around $3.5 million (£2.4 million). The watch, covered in 129.61 carats of diamonds, was one of the most expensive items at the event and added extra shine to his Met Gala debut.
