Thomas Tuchel shares his thoughts on Harry Maguire’s comments about not making the England squad.

In his first public chat since unveiling his controversial 26-man England squad for the 2026 World Cup, Thomas Tuchel shared how surprised he was by the reaction from Harry Maguire, who didn’t make the cut.
Tuchel’s team for the big tournament in North America looks very different, with most of the old Southgate players left out—except for the ever-dependable Jordan Henderson.
Some well-known names like Phil Foden, Cole Palmer, and Lewis Hall were also missed, but one of the biggest surprises was Harry Maguire being left out. Tuchel picked five centre-backs: Ezri Konsa, Marc Guehi, Jarrel Quansah, Dan Burn, and John Stones, who will all travel to the tournament.
After seeing Maguire’s upset message on social media, Tuchel explained the reasons behind leaving the Manchester United defender at home. He said he was “surprised” by Maguire going public, as they had talked about it privately.
Reports suggest Maguire was left out because he might not be a regular starter and wouldn’t fit well in a backup role. Maguire didn’t seem to agree and voiced his feelings openly online.
Tuchel responded by saying his loyalty lies with the players who helped the team during the important autumn period. “I was surprised to read Maguire’s statement,” Tuchel said. “We had a private chat where he could share his feelings. The decision was to stick with the defenders who carried us through.”
Maguire said he was “shocked” because he felt confident about playing a big part this summer after a strong season. He told talkSPORT, “I’m gutted by the decision but wish the team the best.” Even his family spoke out, calling it “disgusting” that he wasn’t picked.
Tuchel’s bold squad choice will definitely get lots of attention, especially with many experienced players still waiting for their chance. But if England does well, Tuchel’s fresh approach could set a strong example for future teams.
