Tottenham ‘agree’ first summer signing right after staying up in the league
Tottenham Hotspur will need a big makeover this summer after finishing 17th in the Premier League for the second year in a row. Although Spurs won the Europa League in 2024-25 and were safe under Ange Postecoglou, the 2025-26 season was much tougher. Their spot in the Premier League was only confirmed at the very last moment.
Roberto De Zerbi secured Spurs’ first home league win in over five months with a 1-0 win against Everton, thanks to Joao Palhinha’s goal. That result meant that West Ham’s win over Leeds didn’t affect Spurs. While West Ham prepares for life back in the Championship, Spurs can look forward to another season in the Premier League. But they have a lot of work to do to keep their place next year too.
Transfer plans are already underway at Spurs. After trying to sign Liverpool’s left-back Andy Robertson for a bargain deal in January, they’re now close to bringing him in on a free transfer now that their Premier League spot is safe. Robertson, who is the Scotland captain, is leaving Liverpool after nine years. During his time there, he helped the team win two Premier League titles and the Champions League in 2018-19.
His contract expires this summer, and according to journalist Ben Jacobs, an agreement with Spurs is almost done. Robertson, 32, will likely lead Scotland at what could be his only World Cup soon. De Zerbi will want to make the most of him in the next season as Robertson returns to England for pre-season.
Robertson leaves Liverpool as a fan favourite after many great seasons, though he only started 11 league games in 2025-26 because Liverpool brought in Milos Kerkez last summer. Now, he faces a new challenge at Spurs, where left-back duties have sometimes been covered by right-footed Djed Spence.
The Scotland captain played 276 Premier League games for Liverpool and was named twice in the Champions League Team of the Season after moving from Hull City in 2015. Spurs fans will be excited to see what he brings to their team.
