Virgil van Dijk could make a surprising move, which would be a big setback for Liverpool.
Liverpool might face another tough challenge, as reports are linking Virgil van Dijk with a surprise move away from the club. After the 2025/26 season, there have already been big changes at Anfield—Arne Slot was let go and replaced by former Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola. On top of that, key players like Mo Salah, Andy Robertson, and Ibrahima Konate have all left on free transfers.
Now, it seems Liverpool captain Van Dijk could also be on the move. According to Turkish journalist Yagiz Sabuncuoglu, Galatasaray are planning some big moves in the next transfer window, and Van Dijk is at the top of their list. The window opens on June 15, and they’re expected to make an official offer for the 34-year-old defender.
Sabuncuoglu said, “Galatasaray hasn’t made a move for Van Dijk yet. I expect some action after June 15th. They are considering making an official offer.” He also mentioned Galatasaray’s interest in Bernardo Silva, though that player might be heading to Real Madrid, and their efforts to sign Can Uzun from Eintracht Frankfurt.
Going after Van Dijk would be a bold move from Galatasaray, with reports saying he is their top target and that talks are ongoing. Still, it seems unlikely he’d leave Liverpool right now. Van Dijk is getting ready to lead the Netherlands at the World Cup, which starts with their game against Japan on Sunday.
With Konate’s move to Real Madrid, Liverpool now have fewer experienced center-backs, leaving Van Dijk and Joe Gomez as the main options. Young defender Giovanni Leoni is coming back from an ACL injury, and Rennes’ Jeremy Jacquet is joining the team as well. Liverpool have also been linked with Burnley’s Maxime Esteve.
Interestingly, Liverpool might bring back former player Jarell Quansah to help strengthen the defense. Quansah, who moved to Bayer Leverkusen last summer, has a buy-back clause for £55 million. Reports say he has agreed personal terms to return to Liverpool, coming back to the club where he grew up in the academy.
