Barcelona’s real thoughts about Anthony Gordon come out behind the scenes as a La Liga record is broken

Anthony Gordon got off to a great start at Camp Nou with Barcelona before the international break, setting up four assists in his first six La Liga games. The only downside was that he hadn’t scored yet. But on Saturday, the England player put those doubts to rest by netting his first goal in Barcelona’s 3-0 win over Getafe.

That goal also showed just how well Gordon has begun his time at the club. Barcelona and coach Hansi Flick were quick to praise him, especially since he set a La Liga record with that goal.

Barcelona kept their perfect start to the season with that win, thanks to goals from Gordon, Gabriel Jesus, and Jules Kounde. They now sit five points clear of second-placed Atletico Madrid.

Gordon’s goal came just 1 minute and 18 seconds into the match—the fastest goal in La Liga this season. The previous record was held by Espanyol’s Alvaro Garcia, who scored after two minutes and 10 seconds earlier this year.

Since Gordon moved from Newcastle United, Flick has been a big fan. The German coach said, “He’s doing great. Even before scoring, he was playing well. You could see his confidence when he scored for England during the break, and he carried that into Barcelona. He brings a lot to the team with his speed, ball skills, and dribbling. He’s always a threat and creates chances.”

Off the pitch, Gordon is impressing too. According to The Athletic, after England’s loss to Spain, he took the time to meet up with his Barca teammates and share some laughs, which his new teammates really appreciated. It’s clear he’s working hard to fit in with the team, the coach, and fans—and scoring more goals on the field will only help.

The 25-year-old seemed to feel a big weight lifted when he finally scored. He looked more relaxed and confident after the goal and can now focus on playing great football without worrying about missing chances.

After the match, Gordon said he hopes this is just the first of many goals for Barcelona. Given how often Barca score, he probably has nothing to worry about. He shared, “I feel great with how people have welcomed me. My family and I are very happy. We’ve started well, but I know I can do even more. Hopefully, this goal is just the beginning.

“Did I expect this start? I hoped so. But Barcelona is the best club in the world, and I didn’t expect to connect with the club this quickly. I’m so happy because it’s making my football better with every touch and dribble.

“I waited longer than I wanted to score! I should’ve scored sooner, but I’m very happy now. I’m on a good run, and I want to keep it going. Like I said, I can do a lot more than people have seen. I’ve started well, but I want to do much more.”
