Man Utd surprised by Ruben Amorim’s interest in player who might be moved by agent

Manchester United defender Leny Yoro is catching a lot of attention from AC Milan ahead of the January transfer window, as Ruben Amorim looks to bring back the young talent.

Yoro joined United in July 2024 for £52 million from Lille. He quickly became one of Amorim’s key players before the coach was sacked in January 2026, after 14 months in charge. The French defender was the third most-used player under Amorim, just behind Portuguese stars Diogo Dalot and Bruno Fernandes. Now, Amorim wants to re-sign him from Old Trafford.

Despite arriving as one of Europe’s most exciting young players, Yoro hasn’t quite met expectations during his two and a half years at United. His form and potential seem to have dipped. This season, 20-year-old Yoro has been played out of position as a right-back by Michael Carrick, which hasn’t suited him. At 6ft 3in, he looks a bit awkward there, especially in recent losses to Bournemouth (3-0) and Chelsea (2-0).

Even with these challenges, AC Milan is still very interested. According to Calciomercato, the club has added Yoro to their January shortlist, especially after long-term injury to their defender Matteo Gabbia. Yoro is listed alongside Bayern Munich’s Kim-Min Jae and Sporting Lisbon’s Goncalo Ignacio.

Interestingly, super agent Jorge Mendes is trying to push Ruben Amorim to sign Lecce’s Tiago Gabriel, but Amorim isn’t keen on that. Instead, Milan wants Mendes to help bring Yoro to Italy in January, as Amorim is “particularly interested” in reuniting with United’s No. 15.

The deal could happen for between €40 million and €50 million (£33m-£41m), which would make Yoro one of Milan’s most expensive signings.

Former United chief scout Mick Brown shared his thoughts this month, saying Yoro is “highly rated” at Manchester United but that Carrick is struggling to find a spot for him in the team. Brown explained that playing right-back isn’t Yoro’s preferred position and probably won’t be long-term.

“If he’s going to improve, he needs to play regularly,” Brown said. “That hasn’t been happening, so there’s talk of a loan move in January. I’m sure many clubs will be interested, and with big clubs like Paris Saint-Germain, money won’t be a problem. United can set their price.”

A loan could be a smart move for United, giving Yoro the chance to play first-team football every week in the position he prefers, while keeping his value high for the future.
