John Fury didn’t hold back in a fight he’s called the toughest he’s ever had, and the other guy definitely ended up worse for wear.

As you might guess, the Fury family are tough fighters who aren’t afraid to throw a punch if they think it’s needed. Of course, Tyson Fury, the former heavyweight champ, is the most famous and successful of the bunch, but many say his dad John is the fiercest of them all.

John grew up in a traveller family from Ireland before moving around the English Midlands. Like his sons Tyson and Tommy, he’s always been a fighter, and he’s proven that many times throughout their boxing careers.

John’s been fighting his whole life, and interestingly, his toughest battle wasn’t in the ring—it was once when he was trying to sell a rug to a guy in his younger days. But John made sure the guy didn’t mess with him.

He writes in his book, *When Fury Takes Over*: “We walked to a nearby deserted playground where there were swings, a slide, and one of those spinning roundabouts. We went straight at it and it was a tough fight. I lost a tooth and needed stitches in my lip, while he lost half an ear and was temporarily blind in one eye.”

After the fight, the other guy accepted defeat and, as a sign of respect, even sat with John and offered him a glass of fizzy pop.

Unlike Tyson and Tommy, John didn’t spend much time in the world of professional boxing—he only boxed professionally for eight years after a short time in prison. He made his pro debut in April 1987, losing to rugby player Adam Fogerty, but worked his way up to a heavyweight title fight in June 1989, which he lost on points.

John wrote, “Without anyone looking out for me, I still made it to title level. Sometimes I wonder how far I could’ve gone if I’d had better support and guidance.”

In the end, John retired from professional boxing in June 1995 with a record of 8 wins, 4 losses, and 1 draw.
