Robert MacIntyre calls out the ‘shocking’ LIV Golf as the Saudi-backed tour faces big problems.
Robert MacIntyre has shared why he wasn’t tempted to join LIV Golf, even though the Saudi-backed league’s future looks uncertain.
When LIV Golf launched in 2021, it quickly shook up the golf world. The new league aimed to challenge the PGA Tour, offering huge money deals—like the one reportedly worth $200 million to six-time major winner Phil Mickelson.
But now, almost five years later, LIV Golf’s future is unclear. The Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund, which supports the league, might pull out because of ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.
Amid this, world number 12 MacIntyre, who has stayed loyal to the PGA Tour despite offers from LIV, opened up about his views.
“I said early on that the money was crazy,” he told Golf Digest. “How much money does a person really need? After thinking more, I can see why some players joined. Some timed it well, while others made wild choices. To each their own.”
Many top players got offers to join LIV, but MacIntyre says he never really thought about accepting.
“I didn’t want to give up on my dream,” he explained.
“My dream was to play in Ryder Cups, and I’ve done that,” he added. “Now, my only goal is to win a major. Once I do that, I’ll be happy to step away.”
MacIntyre made his first Ryder Cup team for Europe in 2023, finishing third in qualifying points. He played impressively at the tournament in Italy, going undefeated and helping Europe win in his debut.
Two years later, he made the team again at Bethpage Black and played a big part in Europe’s first away win since 2012.
“The money on the PGA Tour is still amazing,” he said.
Now, the Scottish golfer is chasing his dream of winning a major, coming close with a runner-up finish at the 2025 U.S. Open at Oakmont.
