The 2026 World Cup is bringing an exciting change to how national anthems are done at the tournament, according to a new FIFA announcement.

For the first time ever, the World Cup will feature 48 teams, split into 12 groups of four, followed by a round of 32. There will be a record 104 matches played across the United States, Mexico, and Canada – the first time three countries are hosting together.

There are lots of new rules this year, from changes in the game itself to hydration breaks because of the hot weather. But one big update is how the pre-match ceremonies will look before all 104 games.

National anthems will still be a big part of the ceremony, but now all 26 players from each team will stand on the field while the anthem plays. Both teams’ squads, along with the referees, will gather around the center circle in a “360-degree” setup. This will include huge country flag banners that cover much of the pitch. The 15 players not starting the game get to be more involved instead of just standing off near the bench.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino said the new ceremony will bring players and fans closer. “Having everyone face each other in the center will create a moment of pride and unity for the teams and fans alike,” he said. The new setup will also include cool visual touches like player entry arches and handheld flags, making the experience exciting from every seat in the stadium.

After the anthem, players will shake hands, and then the captains will do the coin toss to start the game. Unlike the FIFA Club World Cup, there won’t be individual player walk-outs this time.

There will be a half-time show at the final, featuring both Shakira and Madonna, plus three different opening ceremonies. In Mexico, Shakira and Burna Boy will perform the World Cup anthem at the first game against South Africa on June 11. In Toronto, Canadian stars Michael Buble and Alanis Morissette will perform, and in Los Angeles, Katy Perry and Future will take the stage on June 12.
