The Monaco Grand Prix results were updated five days after the race, with an official statement released.
The F1 race stewards recently made a decision that changed the results of the Monaco Grand Prix, five days after the race. Because of this, one driver lost his spot on the podium.
On June 7, Mercedes driver and championship leader Kimi Antonelli won his fifth race in a row, extending his lead to 66 points ahead of Lewis Hamilton, who finished second. Ferrari’s veteran driver came in second at Monaco.
Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar had initially finished third, right behind McLaren’s Oscar Piastri in fourth. But Hadjar later found out he lost his place on the podium because Pierre Gasly’s podium finish was put back after Alpine’s successful review.
Piastri, plus Racing Bulls’ Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad, all dropped a spot as a result. Gasly, who started ninth, moved up to fourth and then was promoted to third after Mercedes’ George Russell got a late penalty.
However, Gasly was given two five-second penalties for speeding in the pit lane, which dropped him to seventh place. Gasly shared his feelings: “I’m just heartbroken right now. We all work so hard for these moments, and then it gets taken away. The team set the speed limiter right, and I used it properly.”
Thankfully, Alpine appealed Gasly’s pit lane speeding penalty, and the stewards agreed that he didn’t break the 60 km/h limit. This means Gasly’s third place was restored after the review hearing.
The stewards said, “We decided that Car 10 [Gasly] did not go over the speed limit.” Alpine also thanked the FIA and Formula One Management for being open and working with them during this process.
Alpine’s statement added, “We’re happy with the FIA’s decision to allow our review and cancel the penalties, which puts our driver back in third place. Now the team is focused on the upcoming Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix, aiming for great results with both cars.”
F1 is back this weekend with the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix on June 14.
The updated top 10 finishers in Monaco are:
1. Kimi Antonelli
2. Lewis Hamilton
3. Pierre Gasly
4. Isack Hadjar
5. Oscar Piastri
6. Liam Lawson
7. Arvid Lindblad
8. Alexander Albon
9. Esteban Ocon
10. Fernando Alonso
Right after the good news about his podium was announced, Gasly told Sky Sports, “I’m really happy and proud of the whole team. Sunday night was tough with so many mixed feelings—proud of our work but sad about the penalty. The team did an amazing job, and I’m grateful for how F1 and the FIA handled everything with transparency. Today’s decision is a big step forward for the sport.”
Gasly has now finished on the podium six times in his career, and this latest result has moved him up to eighth in the championship.
