Julian Alvarez’s future has been a hot topic all summer, with the Atletico Madrid striker catching the eye of several big clubs, including their La Liga rivals Barcelona.

Just last week, Alvarez openly said he wants to leave Los Rojiblancos, and clubs like Arsenal and Real Madrid have shown interest in signing the Argentine this summer.

But it seems Alvarez has set his heart on just one club—Barcelona. Recently, a fan favourite from both Argentina and Atletico Madrid shared his thoughts on the situation.

Maxi Rodriguez spoke to Marca about Alvarez’s future and said it’s best to avoid turning this into a long transfer battle between Atletico and Barcelona.

He said, “I don’t know all the details; everyone looks out for their own interests. The best thing is to find a solution that works. Fans want what’s best for their club, and Julián wants what’s best for himself. We all have to be responsible. I can’t say much because I don’t know the full story. It’s hard to comment from outside.”

Rodriguez played five and a half seasons at Atletico Madrid after leaving Barcelona, where he had spent three years with Espanyol. He ended his last season at Atletico as the top scorer in the Copa del Rey before moving to Liverpool in the Premier League. At Anfield, he won the 2012 League Cup under Kenny Dalglish before returning to his hometown club, Newell’s Old Boys.

Earlier this summer, Alvarez was linked with a return to the Premier League, with Arsenal exploring a possible deal involving one of their key players.

Still, Alvarez seems focused only on joining Barcelona this summer. Rodriguez hopes this won’t distract him from his main goal: helping Argentina win their fourth World Cup.
