Donald Trump pauses his speech for an awkward moment with Rory McIlroy
Donald Trump had an unexpected moment during his White House speech when he warmly congratulated Rory McIlroy, making things a bit awkward but sweet.
On Tuesday night, President Trump hosted a state dinner with King Charles III and Queen Camilla, welcoming many guests, including Northern Irish golf star Rory McIlroy. Recently, McIlroy made history by becoming only the fourth man to win back-to-back Masters titles at Augusta.
Throughout the Masters weekend, Rory held a strong lead but faced tough competition from players like Scottie Scheffler, Cameron Young, and Justin Rose before claiming his second green jacket. Millions of people around the world, including Trump, watched in awe.
Shortly after the win, Trump congratulated McIlroy on social media. But during the state dinner speech, Trump went off script to ask Rory to stand up so he could personally recognize his bravery at Augusta.
Trump said, “The whole world has been inspired by this special spirit we share—unstoppable courage. Speaking of that, where’s Rory McIlroy? Please stand up, Rory. That was real courage. Very impressive! I had to stop my speech because I saw him win such a tough tournament. Congratulations, very proud of you.”
Everyone applauded as Rory stood to accept the praise, though you could tell he felt a little awkward with the sudden spotlight.
Even though he was at the White House, McIlroy won’t be playing in this week’s Cadillac Championship at Trump Doral National Resort, which is only about a 20-30 minute flight from his home in Jupiter, Florida. He’s taking a break after the Masters.
Trump shared his excitement about seeing Rory play at Doral, writing on Truth Social, “Congratulations to Rory McIlroy on another great Masters win! He played amazingly under huge pressure. Every year, Rory becomes more of a LEGEND! Looking forward to watching him compete in two weeks at Doral.”
Instead of the Cadillac Championship, McIlroy is expected to return at the Truist Championship from May 7–10 at Quail Hollow, just before the PGA Championship on May 14.
