World number one Jannik Sinner has earned some extra ranking points this week, even though he didn’t play a match.
He won his sixth ATP 1000 event in a row at the Italian Open on Sunday, beating Casper Ruud in the final.
There was some drama during his semi-final match against Daniil Medvedev, which stretched over two days because of rain.
Just before the delay on Friday night, when Sinner was leading 4-2 in the final set, Medvedev complained that Sinner was getting medical treatment for cramps.
Players aren’t allowed to take medical timeouts just to treat cramps, but they can get treatment during changeovers or set breaks.
Sinner had been dealing with a thigh issue earlier in the match. Medvedev later called for a rule change but admitted he wasn’t sure what treatment Sinner actually received.
There’s no hint that Sinner broke any rules, and he’s now heading into the French Open hoping to win there for the first time.
Before the tournament starts, Sinner got extra ranking points because of a unique ATP rule.
Last May, he withdrew late from the Hamburg Open after losing to Carlos Alcaraz in the French Open final, and he got a 50-point penalty on his record for a whole year.
Now that the penalty has expired, those 50 points have been added back to his ranking.
According to ATP rules, his worst result from 2025—a round of 16 loss at the Halle Open, which earned him 50 points—is removed from his total.
So, Sinner basically got those points back, giving him a bigger lead over Alcaraz at the top of the rankings.
Alcaraz has already pulled out of the French Open and Wimbledon because of a wrist injury, giving Sinner a great chance to extend his lead.
However, Sinner will lose those extra 50 points next month since he won’t play in this year’s Halle Open.
