At the Catalunya Grand Prix in Barcelona, we’ll see an all-British front row to kick off the race. George Russell just edged out Lewis Hamilton to take pole position after being the fastest in qualifying. The current World Championship leader, Kimi Antonelli, will start third, while the defending champion, Lando Norris, is set to start fourth.

The final part of qualifying had some excitement too, as Charles Leclerc crashed on his first lap and will have to start from 10th place. Russell is eager to close the gap in the championship standings after falling 68 points behind Antonelli following a tough race in Monaco, so winning in Barcelona is really important for him.

While the attention is often on the top drivers fighting for the best spots, there are also smaller battles going on. For example, Aston Martin and Cadillac drivers have been pushing each other hard this season, even though their teams have struggled to keep up with the leaders.

One big moment came when Lance Stroll finally beat his teammate Fernando Alonso in qualifying for the first time since Silverstone 2024. Even though both Aston Martin drivers had a tough day and ended up near the bottom—Stroll in 21st and Alonso in 22nd—this was a win for Stroll and a break in Alonso’s strong qualifying streak.

The team hasn’t had a car competitive enough to fight at the front, so Stroll will be happy to end this losing run against Alonso and is hoping to build on it in the races ahead. Alonso’s long streak of beating Stroll was one of the longest in F1 qualifying history. Only Michael Schumacher, who beat his teammates for 56 races between 1992 and 1995, and Ayrton Senna, who did it for 44 races from 1985 to 1988, have had longer streaks.
