Man Utd starts talks to sign England player who’s been out of the spotlight, with Michael Carrick’s top choice revealed

Manchester United have started talks to sign a Premier League star as their second big signing this summer after bringing in Ederson. The club has agreed with Atalanta to sign the Brazilian midfielder Ederson for an initial £35 million plus £4 million in extra payments. The 26-year-old’s transfer should be completed by early July, according to The Athletic, but his recent call-up to Brazil’s World Cup squad as an injury replacement might delay things a bit.
Earlier this week, Fabrizio Romano reported that United had made first contact to sign West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes, but the price tag was a huge £85 million. Since West Ham got relegated to the Championship, they need to sell players, so United might be able to negotiate a lower fee.
Now, it seems they are focusing on Newcastle’s Lewis Hall as their top target. The young England left-back missed out on a World Cup spot with Thomas Tuchel’s squad, but he could be one of the players Newcastle might sell after missing out on European football. United need a left-back after Tyrell Malacia left on a free transfer. Luke Shaw, their main left-back, played every Premier League game this season, but with Champions League football coming, United want more competition for the 30-year-old.
Hall, 21, came through Chelsea’s academy and played 12 times for their first team before joining Newcastle on loan. Newcastle will make his move permanent in summer 2024, and since then, he’s become an important player for them. He impressed many during Newcastle’s 1-1 draw against Barcelona in the Champions League semi-final first leg, doing a great job defending on the right wing.
According to TEAMtalk, United have already talked about signing Hall and now see him as their top target. He’s said to be available for £60 million, but Newcastle might not want to sell for that low. Hall is reportedly very excited about the chance to join Manchester United and play in the Champions League next season. He also sees the move as an important step to help him grow as a player.
