Top National League player who might beat Jamie Vardy’s record shares thoughts after big offer turned down
Boreham Wood winger Abdul Abdulmalik has shared an update after the National League club turned down a record-breaking £1.5 million offer from a Swedish team.
At 23, Abdulmalik has caught the eye of Championship and League One clubs this summer, especially after playing a key role in Boreham Wood’s run to the National League play-off final last season. He scored and assisted in the final, which they lost on penalties to Rochdale after a 2-2 draw over 120 minutes.
The team has had a strong start this season with two wins and a draw. Abdulmalik helped with two goals in their 3-1 win against FC Halifax. However, he wasn’t included in the squad for Saturday’s 3-0 win away at Forest Green, as rumors about his future keep growing.
Earlier in August, Sky Sports News reported that Swedish top-tier club Djurgardens had a £750,000 bid rejected by Boreham Wood. Since then, they’ve made two more offers, with the latest reaching a huge £1.5 million—breaking the non-league transfer record previously set by Leicester signing Jamie Vardy for £1 million.
Besides interest from Sweden and EFL clubs, French teams are also believed to be watching Abdulmalik closely.
Abdulmalik came through Millwall’s youth academy but never played for their first team. He spent time on loan at Wealdstone during the 2023/24 season before joining Boreham Wood, then in the National League South, as a free agent in summer 2024.
On Instagram, where he has over 10,000 followers, Abdulmalik posted a heartfelt message saying he’s “ready for the next challenge” and wants to move on from Boreham Wood.
He wrote: “I’m just a kid from South London. Like many boys where I’m from, I grew up on a council estate. We dreamt of playing football at the highest level. I’ve always pictured the big games, the stadium lights, and playing alongside the best.
“Kids like me know we have to work extra hard—nothing is given for free. That’s why I keep pushing myself to be better. I wouldn’t be where I am without the support of my family and loved ones. We don’t come from much, so their support means everything to me.
“I’ve promised to do my best for them and take my career as far as possible. Because of hard work and never giving up, this chance to move forward has come. This is my moment to step up, improve my game, and keep my promise to those who matter most.
“Opportunities like this are rare, especially in the National League where so many talented players don’t get noticed. Football moves fast, and you don’t get many second chances.
“I owe it to myself and to kids growing up like me to fight for this one. Leaving a club is never easy. I’m so thankful to everyone who’s been part of my journey—including everyone at Boreham Wood and the amazing fans. You have my respect always.
“But now, I’m ready for what’s next. I want to prove to myself and those around me that I can reach the very top.”
