Roy Keane calls out the wives and girlfriends of England players for their ‘silly’ behavior during the World Cup.
World Cup experts are teaming up to help Roy Keane and Alan Shearer sort out their disagreement.

Roy Keane has shared his strong opinion about the partners of England players wearing shirts with their partners’ names on the back during this summer’s World Cup – and he didn’t hold back.

Earlier this week, Ashlyn Castro, who is dating England midfielder Jude Bellingham, was spotted wearing a Three Lions shirt with “Bellingham 10” on the back. While some other players’ girlfriends and wives chose not to wear shirts with their partner’s name and number, Roy Keane still gave a very direct take on the topic.

During the latest episode of The Overlap, Keane was asked what he’d send to Room 101, which means getting rid of something he doesn’t like. Without hesitation, he went for the jerseys worn by the players’ partners.

“Oh no, the jerseys… when all the players’ wives and families go to the match and the wives have jerseys with the players’ names on the back… wow,” he said. “Kids wearing them is fine, but wives and partners doing it? That’s a bit much.”

Ian Wright, who was on The Overlap with Gary Neville, didn’t agree with Roy. He said he “didn’t mind” the gesture. But Keane stood firm.

“You don’t agree? Most of these couples split up a year later,” Keane pointed out. “They’re all taking photos with names like Jimmy or Johnny on the back. We know who their partner is!”

Wright and Neville laughed, but Keane added, “Kids wearing the shirts is okay, but adults? Sitting in the family section, all with the same kind of jersey? I can’t support that.”

Wright defended, “Her husband is playing, she’s proud, and she wants to show it. Seems simple.” But Keane was clear: “This only happens at the World Cup, you don’t see it every week at Old Trafford or Anfield. Why only at the World Cup? Imagine a woman says, ‘Today I’m wearing my husband’s football shirt.’”

Earlier this month, Alan Shearer revealed that both Ian Wright and Micah Richards have tried to help him and Roy Keane settle their long-standing feud.

“We’ve never really gotten along,” Shearer said in a Q&A in New York. “I don’t really know him. But two friends, Micah Richards and Ian Wright, say he’s a great guy. We just went head-to-head on the pitch. He didn’t like me, I didn’t like him, and that’s okay. You’re supposed to be rivals.”

Roy Keane is working alongside Wright on ITV’s World Cup coverage, while Shearer and Richards are with the BBC.

Keane once talked about an incident where he lost his temper during a game. “We were losing 4-3, near the end,” he recalled. “I got sent off for pushing him. If I’m getting sent off, I thought ‘might as well punch him properly,’ because the punishment is the same. It was just a push, really. Silly, but that’s how it went.”
