Serena Williams’ new ranking is out after her tennis comeback win, and it seems like it might be a mistake.
Serena Williams got a big boost in her official WTA Rankings after making an exciting return to tennis.
After being away from the sport for 1,375 days, tennis legend Serena came back on Tuesday in a doubles match with young Canadian star Victoria Mboko at London’s Queen’s Club.
The 44-year-old had retired to focus on her family and spend time with her two children, Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr and Adira River Ohanian. When asked why she decided to return, Serena said, “I had nothing better to do, I got tired of sitting at home. My kids are out of school for the summer, so why not?”
Serena and Mboko surprised everyone by beating the third-seeded team Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Erin Routliffe 7-6 (7-2), 6-2. This win put them into the quarter-finals, where they will face Laura Siegemund and Leylah Fernandez on Thursday.
Because of this win, both players are guaranteed at least 108 ranking points each. Since Serena had no ranking after being away so long, she will jump 9,407 places to No. 592 in women’s doubles. Meanwhile, Mboko moved up 19 spots to a career-high No. 114 in doubles.
If they win their next match and reach the semi-finals, they’ll earn 195 points. That would send Serena up nearly 200 more spots to about No. 394, and Mboko up to No. 102.
With Serena back on the court, fans are excited to see if she’ll return to Wimbledon later this month. Serena, a seven-time Wimbledon singles champ, hasn’t played there since her first-round loss in 2022 to a lower-ranked player. Fans hope to see her rewrite that story, but when asked about returning after her win, Serena said she’s “taking it one day at a time.” She added, “I still have a little time to decide, and they’ve been great about giving me that space.”
If Serena does decide to play in singles or doubles at Wimbledon, the tournament would likely be happy to give her a wildcard to make sure she can compete.
