The United States became the “unofficial world champions” by beating Australia in the World Cup.

The United States won 2-0 against Australia in their second match at the 2026 World Cup, securing a spot in the round of 32. With this win, they’ve also become the unofficial world champions in soccer! Mauricio Pochettino’s team has been playing really well, winning both their matches so far—first against Paraguay and now against Australia.
The game’s first goal came early, in the 11th minute, when Australia’s Cameron Burgess accidentally scored for the U.S. Then, just before halftime, Alex Freeman scored to make it 2-0 and seal the victory. Now, American fans can start guessing who their team will play next and dream about winning the whole tournament.
Not everyone knows, but by beating Australia, the U.S. took over the unofficial world champion title. Australia had earned it earlier when they won 2-0 against Turkey, and Turkey had held it after beating Kosovo in March 2026. This is actually the third time the U.S. has held this title. They’ll try to defend it when they play Turkey in their last group game.
The Unofficial Football World Championships is a fun way to figure out the best international team. It started back in 1967 when Scotland beat England—the first time England lost since winning the World Cup. To win this title, a team has to beat the current holder, kind of like in some combat sports.
England was first to hold this title after beating Scotland in 1873, and the title often passed between England and Scotland because they played each other so much early on. Scotland has held the title 86 times, last in 2007, and England 73 times, last in 2000. Since soccer started mostly in the British Isles, it makes sense they dominated.
The first team outside the British Isles to hold the title was Austria, after a big 5-0 win over Scotland. Argentina has held it the third most times—72—with their last reign ending in November 2023.
The U.S. might not be focused on this unofficial title as they prepare to face Turkey, but their fans can be proud to say they’re the current Unofficial Football World Champions!
