Trevor Chalobah’s social media post from eight years ago is going viral after his surprising World Cup call-up!
A forgotten social media post from Trevor Chalobah recently went viral after the Chelsea defender got a surprising call-up to the World Cup squad.
The 26-year-old seemed to have missed his best chance to play for England at a World Cup since he wasn’t originally included in the 26-man team. Instead, Thomas Tuchel picked Ezri Konsa, Marc Guehi, Jarell Quansah, Dan Burn, and John Stones as the central defenders, with Stones and Konsa expected to be the main pairing.
But everything changed just before the tournament started when Chalobah got a last-minute call-up to replace the injured Tino Livramento. Livramento, who plays for Newcastle United, hurt his hamstring during training and will miss the whole World Cup. He’s made six senior appearances for England but was only expected to have a small role, so his injury is still a tough blow for the team right before their first game.
The 23-year-old had a tough season with Newcastle last year, playing just 26 games because of various injuries. Now, Chelsea’s Chalobah is stepping in. He only has one England cap so far, from a friendly loss to Senegal last year. Although he usually plays center-back, he can also cover right-back.
Chalobah’s surprise call-up shocked some fans, who thought players like Manchester United’s Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw, or Newcastle’s Lewis Hall might be better picks. But for Chalobah, this is a huge opportunity, and you can tell how much it means to him already.
Right after the news, an old social media post from when Chalobah was just a teenager at the 2018 World Cup started spreading. He had shared a picture of the World Cup trophy with the caption “One day,” along with a praying emoji and the hashtag #Believe.
Even if some fans don’t agree with the decision, it’s a really nice story for the hardworking defender.
England had to move fast to replace Livramento since FIFA only allows teams to swap injured players up to 24 hours before their first World Cup match. Plus, the replacement must have been on the original 55-man provisional squad, and Chalobah was on the standby list.
