What Man Utd fans did to Bruno Fernandes just minutes after the final whistle says a lot as Old Trafford turns against him.
Manchester United suffered a tough 3-0 loss to Bournemouth at Old Trafford in their latest Premier League match, meaning they’ve only won once in their first eight games this season.
Manager Michael Carrick decided to start club captain Bruno Fernandes on the bench after some comments he made earlier this week in Como, but that choice didn’t work out well. As Carrick and the team headed off the pitch, the fans made their feelings clear towards Fernandes and the rest of the squad.
Bournemouth’s 3-0 win was a tough moment for Carrick, the team, and the fans, especially since the Cherries made history by becoming the first club to score three or more goals in four straight league games at Old Trafford.
Despite the tough result, the fans sang Carrick’s name for the last 10 minutes, showing some support as he left the field—though it seemed like he knew his time as manager might be coming to an end. Once Carrick left, the crowd turned and started booing the players, with some of the frustration aimed at Fernandes.
The fans’ feelings toward Fernandes seem mixed, especially after his recent comments and performances this season. With his contract ending soon, there’s uncertainty about his future at the club.
Sky Sports host David Jones shared a theory about why Carrick might have kept Fernandes on the bench. Carrick is well-liked by fans for his past achievements as a player and interim manager, while Fernandes, despite winning an FA Cup and Carabao Cup, hasn’t reached the same level of success.
Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher thinks Carrick’s decision to bench Fernandes was on purpose, maybe even to embarrass the 32-year-old. He said, “I think it was a deliberate decision to leave him on the bench and almost try and embarrass him.”
Carragher also believes Carrick doesn’t want to stay at the club much longer and might be better off stepping down. He added, “Michael Carrick wants to be changed. He doesn’t want to sit in the dugout again with those players. It’s a situation that’s hard for everyone. Nobody is enjoying watching him right now. Imagine facing Bruno Fernandes tomorrow after not bringing him on? He wants to be out of this misery.”
