Rio Ngumoha was left “speechless” after receiving his first England cap from Jude Bellingham following England’s 1-0 win over New Zealand.

The talented Liverpool forward, who joined England’s World Cup camp in Florida to help with preparations, made his senior Three Lions debut on Saturday as a second-half substitute. At just 17 years and 281 days old, Ngumoha became the fifth-youngest player ever to play for England, behind only Theo Walcott, Wayne Rooney, Jude Bellingham, and James Prinsep.

It was a special day for the young star. He even earned the Player of the Match award after a lively performance on the right wing. After the game, Bellingham gave Ngumoha his England cap and gave a kind speech to the team before handing it over to a clearly surprised Ngumoha.

“Congratulations on an amazing debut,” said the Real Madrid midfielder. “We all enjoyed watching you, and you have a bright future with your club and hopefully with us too. It’s a pleasure to give you this cap because I know there will be many more. Well done!”

Ngumoha, clearly moved by the moment, said: “Thank you everyone. I’m happy. I’m speechless. I just want to say thank you. We keep going.”

Ngumoha is one of four young players Thomas Tuchel brought to Florida along with the 26-man World Cup squad. The others are Alex Scott, Josh King, and Ethan Nwaneri. However, Ngumoha won’t be able to play in the World Cup this summer.

FIFA rules allow teams to make changes up to 24 hours before their first match only if a player is injured or sick. Also, the replacement must be on the 55-man provisional squad list. Since Ngumoha isn’t on that list, he can’t step in if someone in the group gets hurt or ill before England’s opener against Croatia on June 17.

Only Alex Scott, who was included in the provisional 55, is eligible to join the team as a replacement. Tuchel said last month, “I’m happy these guys are with us, especially Alex, who was on the 55 but didn’t make the final cut. His reaction was amazing and showed great character.”

Ngumoha can still play in England’s final friendly game against Costa Rica.
