Aston Villa fans are upset with their own club over the legal action involving Jamie Carragher, and the criticism is getting stronger.

Aston Villa fans have shared their thoughts after the club announced it’s taking legal steps against Jamie Carragher for what it called “unacceptable insults” he made on the Stick to Football podcast.

Villa chairman Nassef Sawiris posted a message on X Friday evening saying: “Aston Villa will start legal action against Jamie Carragher for his unacceptable insults about the club and its fans. We won’t let anyone stop our rise in English and European football. Nassef Sawiris, chairman.”

This followed Carragher suggesting that Villa’s coach Unai Emery could replace Michael Carrick as Manchester United manager if Carrick were to be sacked.

Talking about the football world, Carragher said, “Aston Villa will never be Manchester United.” He said Villa fans should “shut up” because, in his view, Real Madrid takes the best players from Manchester United, and teams below Villa also take their players or managers.

Naturally, Villa fans were upset on social media and gave Carragher their opinions, leading the former Liverpool captain to explain his comments further.

He wrote on X, “It was a joke after Villa fans gave me stick for saying Emery might want to join Man Utd. I hope these clips show I’ve praised Emery and Villa for years and said how happy I was when you won the Europa League in 2026.”

On Friday’s Overlap Daily, Carragher added, “I just think Emery is the best manager in the league and if I were Man Utd, I’d consider him. I’m not saying he’ll go, just that I’d ask. Certain managers fit certain clubs, and that’s Emery. He reminds me of Rafa Benitez. If someone said that’s your level, naturally you’d want to prove them wrong.”

He admitted he told some fans to “shut up,” which he probably shouldn’t have, but said it was in good humor since fans had been on his social media a lot.

Despite initial anger, some Villa fans feel the legal action is unnecessary and have even defended Carragher.

One fan said, “I get why Villa and fans are upset by Carragher’s words. They were rude and disrespectful to a proud club. But being offensive isn’t the same as breaking the law. Pundits can have opinions about clubs, even if they’re wrong or rude. Fans can challenge those views too. What is the point of legal action? What wrong is being fixed?”

Another fan asked, “Is this the most embarrassing post by any club? What’s Aston Villa thinking?”

A third added, “As a Villa fan who doesn’t like Carragher, this legal action is embarrassing. It just makes us seem insecure and gives him more attention.”

A fourth said, “As a Villa supporter, this feels like a joke. He hasn’t broken any laws — freedom of speech matters.”

Carragher hasn’t responded yet.

Villa play Fulham at home later today (October 31), then travel to Barcelona’s Camp Nou for a Champions League match on November 3.
