Cesc Fabregas gets closer to his dream coaching job after Como beats RC Lens 9-1

Cesc Fabregas’ reputation as a coach keeps growing, and he’s getting closer to his dream job after Como matched the record for the biggest Champions League win.

On a night to remember for the Spaniard, Como kept surprising everyone with seven second-half goals, beating RC Lens 9-1 away. This big win adds to their strong start in Europe’s top competition.

The Serie A team has already beaten RB Leipzig, Manchester United, and Lens, earning nine points out of 12 and sitting proudly in fourth place during their first Champions League season.

Como’s rise from Serie B to making Champions League history is one of the most amazing stories in recent football. Fabregas has been a key part of this journey. He joined Como as a player in 2022 after leaving Monaco and became their full-time head coach in July 2024, just after they returned to Serie A for the first time in 21 years.

Before that, the 39-year-old was their temporary coach from November to December 2023 but has since proven himself as one of the top managers, building on his success as a player.

After finishing 10th in Serie A in his first season, Fabregas led Como to fourth place and their first-ever Champions League spot. Mixing the positional tactics he learned from Pep Guardiola with the quick style of Arsene Wenger, Como have beaten many strong teams under Fabregas, and this latest big win only brings him closer to his dream job.

Fabregas has always dreamed of coaching his childhood club, Barcelona, a goal he shared four years ago as his playing days were ending.

“I can’t deny it would be a dream to coach Barca one day. Time will tell. Right now, I’m focused on preparing myself to be a good coach,” Fabregas said in a 2022 interview.

Talking about how he’s getting ready to be a manager, he added, “I keep notebooks with notes on what I liked and didn’t like about the coaches I’ve had. It helps me for the future.”

Fabregas came through Barcelona’s famous La Masia academy but left for Arsenal in 2003. He spent eight years in London, then returned to Barcelona in 2011, scoring 42 goals and making 50 assists in 151 games before moving to Chelsea in 2014.

Now, this former midfield star is leading the team from the sidelines, and it seems just a matter of time before he joins one of Europe’s top clubs as a manager.

Coaching Barcelona is his dream, but he’s also open to working with other big teams and hasn’t ruled out managing Real Madrid.

“I don’t have a red line. But one thing I’ve been clear about from the start is that I want to be a head coach, not an assistant,” Fabregas said in May. “As for Real Madrid, I haven’t really thought about it or had time to consider it.”

While Barcelona fans might not be happy if he joins Real Madrid, if Fabregas keeps doing so well, he could soon be in the running to replace someone like Jose Mourinho at a major club.
