England player ratings after beating DR Congo: three players got 4/10 and one scored 10/10
England are through to the last 16 of the World Cup after a thrilling 2-1 comeback win over DR Congo in Atlanta.
Thomas Tuchel’s team managed to avoid being the third European side knocked out early, after Germany and the Netherlands.
DR Congo took the lead early on, with Brian Cipenga scoring in the 7th minute, sneaking a shot past Jordan Pickford. As the game went on, England looked like they might head home after a below-par performance.
But captain Harry Kane gave fans hope when he headed in a cross from Anthony Gordon in the 75th minute. Eleven minutes later, Kane struck again with a powerful shot to put England ahead.
Next up, England face a tough challenge against Mexico at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.
For now, let’s look at how the England players did in Atlanta:
Jordan Pickford – 4
He reached for Cipenga’s early goal but couldn’t stop it. Other than that, he was steady but that moment will stick in his mind.
Djed Spence – 4
He got caught out defending the goal and seemed uncomfortable against Cipenga. Tuchel replaced him with Eze in the second half.
Ezri Konsa – 4
A tough night for the Aston Villa defender, who looked slow and unsure at times.
Marc Guehi – 5
Was shaky at the back along with Konsa but played slightly better.
Nico O’Reilly – 6
The most reliable defender in the first half, though the whole defence struggled.
Declan Rice – 6
Upset with his teammates after conceding but didn’t have his best game. Did his job in midfield overall.
Elliot Anderson – 5
Controlled the ball well but you’d expect more impact from him.
Noni Madueke – 5
Hesitated early on but was dangerous when he pushed forward. Didn’t link well with Spence and was subbed off after an hour.
Jude Bellingham – 6
Forced some great saves from the Congo keeper. Not quite at his best but solid as ever.
Marcus Rashford – 5
Had a shot blocked and hit the side netting. Showed flashes of danger but not enough, replaced after an hour.
Harry Kane – 10
As always, Kane was the star. His first goal was perfect and the second was stunning.
Substitutes:
Bukayo Saka – 7
Not fully fit but caused problems against a tired defense. Hopefully ready to go against Mexico.
Anthony Gordon – 9
Came on to add threat down the left and created both Kane’s goals. Plenty of questions about him have been answered.
Eberechi Eze – 8
One of the key subs, coming on for Spence and helping set up the first goal.
John Stones – N/A
Came on late to help see out the game, too short a time for a rating.
What a dramatic win for England, and we can’t wait to see them take on Mexico next!
