Liverpool have started talks to sign a 6ft 7in young star to replace Mamardashvili, while Bayern Munich is also showing interest.
Liverpool might be busy right up until the transfer deadline, trying to bring in players to make their team stronger in different areas. It’s clear they want to boost their attack, with Bradley Barcola close to joining and talks about signing Ismaila Sarr.
However, fans and experts think they also need to sign a defensive midfielder and maybe improve their fullback positions, especially after some shaky performances from Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong in the first two games of the season.
One surprise target for Liverpool could be a goalkeeper, as they’re reportedly looking for someone to replace Giorgi Mamardashvili. Since joining last season to back up Alisson, the Georgian keeper hasn’t fully convinced the club. He played 20 times last season when Alisson was injured, but doubts remain if he’s the right long-term choice.
Journalist Matteo Moretto has reported that Nottingham Forest, a Premier League rival, want Mamardashvili, which has pushed Liverpool to search for a new keeper. Journalist Sacha Tavolieri says Lucca Brughmans, an 18-year-old, is seen as a great option. But Liverpool face competition from Bayern Munich, who also want to sign the young talent from Genk.
Andoni Iraola, the coach, knows it’s tricky to find a keeper who’s happy to be Alisson’s backup but can also step in when needed. Because Alisson has had injuries before, Liverpool need a top-quality goalkeeper as a backup. That’s why Brughmans looks so promising—he’s impressed in 15 senior games for Genk, kept six clean sheets, and played 25 times for Belgium’s youth teams.
Brughmans comes from the same academy that produced stars like Thibaut Courtois and Mike Penders, which explains why both Liverpool and Bayern Munich are interested. Still, trusting a young, less experienced keeper as Alisson’s backup is a bit of a risk, especially since Liverpool want to compete for trophies this season.
If this gamble works out and Liverpool sign a top-quality keeper who can handle the pressure, they could have found a long-term backup for Alisson while also selling Mamardashvili, who still has questions about his abilities.
